Thoughts from the Coach…
Well, it’s over. You can let out that sigh of relief. Some of you may be thankful the Open is over because you no longer have to do burpees, thrusters, or dumbbell work. Or maybe you’re glad no one is going to be standing next to you counting every single rep for the next year. Or maybe you’re glad that Saturday workouts are now back to partner and team WODs. Either way, the 2020 CrossFit Open has wrapped up. Now it’s time to reflect back on your work, and where YOU can improve on things YOU did well and/or things YOU didn’t do so well. Remember, that’s one of the benefits of the CrossFit Open – it gives us all a great baseline so we know where to focus our skills for the next 365 days.
As we all look back, it’s important to remember that this isn’t a pass/fail test. It’s simply a tool to measure where we are right now in our training. Our game is growth and improvement, and it should never stop. Every day is an opportunity to make a change, whether BIG or small, we have the chance to make a change in our training.
So, as your Coach, I want to congratulate you ALL on the five weeks of CrossFit competition. Whether you got your first handstand push up, first muscle up, first box jump, hit a new weight PR, or simply completed each workout in the Rx’D category, you are better now than when you started. You are miles ahead of where you started this past year. Remember, this is not the finish – it’s the new starting line.
Keep up the hustle and hard work Team Southern Columbus CrossFit.
Coach Kyle

PLEASE JOIN US on Saturday September 28th for the first annual “JENNY” WOD!
Organized by Southern Columbus CrossFit member Beth Simon, the workout will raise funds for her close friend and member of the Columbus CrossFit community Jenny Malec as she battles against stage 4 appendix cancer! Details of the workout will be released soon, and will consist of some of Jenny’s favorite CrossFit movements. Donations of any amount will be accepted.
In February of 2019 at SCCF, more than 50 local CrossFitters completed over 10,000 burpees in one hour to raise money for Jenny to travel to Australia for treatment. Let’s see if we can top that participation on the 28th! If you cannot attend but would like to contribute, please check out Jenny’s GoFundMe to donate and learn more about her fight.
See you on the 28th!
Southern Columbus CrossFit hosted a “burpee power hour” fundraiser last Sunday to help Jenny Malec, a member of the local CrossFit community who is battling a rare form of cancer and needs to seek treatment in Australia. The goal was to complete as many burpees as possible in 60 minutes. Over 50 participants completed 10,481 burpees and raised $1900 from raffles and donations! As you can see from the photo the turnout was awesome, and Jenny summarized the event best herself:
“So a large group of people came together today at Southern Columbus CrossFit to participate in a fundraiser event for me to help me get to Australia for treatment.
Their goal was maybe 20 people. 50+ came. Their goal was maybe $500. $1900 was handed over to me in cash. Their goal was 500 total burpees as a gym in an hour. They ended with over 10,000!
I did shed some tears. I am dumbfounded, amazed, and humbled at all these people, many who didn’t even know me, who came to participate in a fundraiser for me and donated money, gave me hugs, wished me well, and came together as a community.
THIS is what being human is all about, and I was reminded of that today. So many people with caring hearts trying to help someone in need. Someone outstretching their hand to lift another up. Tears are streaming down my face as I type this now.
I’m not sure what I did to deserve this degree of pure kindness and selflessness. But from the bottom of my heart, I thank everyone who came to this event. I thank my friends Beth, Rachel, and Paul for even making this fundraiser happen!
I have an extra reason to fight – I want to make these dollars that were given to me this weekend count – I want to be able to give more hugs and smiles and continue to be part of the CrossFit community, even if I can’t do the workouts. I’ve never been a part of something so big and yet still felt like I mattered; that I impacted anyone.
At the end, on the count of 3, everyone’s voices rang throughout the gym with the words “BEAT CANCER!!!”
I will NEVER forget this day.”
